Quit Bad Habits: 6 Habits to Start Fresh Today

While chatting on our walk today, we somehow ended up talking about habits — the ones that drain energy and joy. Once back home, I wanted to put those thoughts into my diary, so here it is — six habits to quit and begin anew. 🌅

We actually had a whole list of things that we — or you — could quit. But here are the top six we felt are worth focusing on first. These might not be perfect formulas, and there are surely more important ones too. If you have any to add, we’d love to hear them.

Maybe one of these doesn’t quite apply to you — perhaps you enjoy always being available or staying deeply serious — but we felt that working on these could bring some positive shifts, little by little. 🌿

1. Break Free From Being Too Serious

We all have those days where we take everything too seriously — our goals, work, even small mistakes. It’s good to be focused, but when seriousness becomes constant, it can turn into pressure.
Life is meant to be enjoyed. Smile more, laugh often, and give yourself permission to relax. Sometimes, the best way to solve a problem is to step away and breathe.

2. Say Goodbye to Excessive Anger

Anger can sneak in quickly and linger longer than we expect. It eats away at peace and affects the people around us.
Try to pause before reacting. Breathe. Remind yourself that not everything needs a response. The more calm you stay, the more power you hold over your emotions. Your peace of mind is truly priceless.

3. Overcome Procrastination

This one hits close to home. Putting things off feels easy at first, but it piles up stress later.
The trick is to start small — one simple step at a time. Write that message, fold that laundry, open that file. Once you begin, momentum builds. Progress doesn’t have to be perfect — just steady.

4. Let Go of Negative Thinking About Others

It’s easy to slip into judgment or negative thoughts about others. But negativity breeds more negativity.
Try this instead: find at least one good thing about the person in front of you. You’ll notice your energy shift. The more good you see in others, the lighter your heart becomes.

5. Set Boundaries on Always Being Available

It’s wonderful to be there for people, but when you say yes to everyone, you slowly say no to yourself.
Boundaries are not walls — they’re balance. Taking time for yourself doesn’t make you selfish; it makes you stronger. People will start respecting your time when they see you value it too.

6. Defeat Laziness

Ah, the most common one. Laziness feels harmless, but it quietly holds us back.
Push yourself even when you don’t feel like it — just for five minutes. That’s often all it takes to break the cycle. Every small step adds up to something bigger. Remember, consistency beats perfection every single time.

A Little Recap:

Let’s quickly go over the six habits to leave behind —

  • Being too serious
  • Getting angry too often
  • Procrastination
  • Negative thinking about others
  • Always being available
  • Laziness

Letting go of these isn’t about changing overnight. It’s about small, mindful choices that slowly bring peace and clarity into our days.

As always, once we’re back home after our evening walk, we enjoy a comforting home-cooked meal — a small reward for a reflective talk. 🍲
